VULCAN -God of Roman Mythology

The God of Earth Fire

Celestial Artist

Maker of Thunderbolts for Jupiter (Zeus)

Fire of the earth or within the earth as distinguished from the sun or lightning, these were the realm of Vulcan.   His power was the controlled fire that forged metals and created things for the gods and uncontrlled fire that destroyed such as Etna the volcano.

Vulcan was a son of Jupiter and Juno

He was cast out of heaven by either his father or mother, stories differ.   He either fell to earth after being banished and when he landed on an island of Greece called Lemnos his leg was broken from the force.  Mosychlos (mo-sik'los) was the mountain in Lemnos upon which Vulcan fell from heaven.

OR his mother Juno cast him out and he fell to the sea where he stayed for nine years in the caves of the sea gods and learned to forge the metals.

He was not accepted among the gods but with his workshop within the volcanic chambers he was the most powerful of all earth. The cyclopes, or cyclops,  were his servants who worked to forge the thunderbolts.

He also forged armor for Achilles and Meninon, and a throne for Juno which he used to trap her. For Jupiter he made the thunderbolts and in gratitude for these Jupiter gave Venus to Vulcan as his wife.
