LACUNA is not a word much said or even known.
This word is used to describe a hole where something should be, or an empty space where something has been removed or lost, perhaps forgotten.
When a lacuna exists, such as a missing page or chapter in an old book, or a history book, then the complete or actual story is not told. In a book for example, one might say, ....the lacuna in this revised version of my favorite novel has completely altered the story.
In reference to human anatomy a lacuna is a hollowed-out place or a cavity that occurs, in this sense the meaning is used as a "pit or hole," that may grow over time.
In the classic novel 1984 written by George Orwell the main character, Winston, would use 'memory holes' to get rid of unacceptable memories or pieces of history that could no longer be accepted or tolerated.
Memory Holes would then become a common but unspoken part of the life of characters such as Winston.
"He, Winston Smith, knew that Oceania had been in alliance with Eurasia as short a time as four years ago. But where did that knowledge exist? Only in his own consciousness, which in any case must soon be annihilated. And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed— if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became truth." - Nighteen Eighty Four, or 1984 the novel by George Orwel published 1949
MIND THE GAP became a phrase established in the 1960's and used in London and other European cities to caution passengers using the London Underground or other trains. The cautionary words warned a person to be watchful so as not to step into the gap and get caught between the platform and the train.
To mind something is to pay attention to it ... mind your manners. Mind is also that particular unseen force relative to humans that enables each to be aware ot the world and the experiences of it. The mind is a faculty of consciousness, of memory.
The train of thought today may still apply the phrase Mind The Gap as the new cautionary measure to all. Be aware of the memory holes, watch our step, chapters may be missing. Before jumping on board some popular train destination mind the gap, discern the memory holes, comprehend the lacuna and why it may exist.
Whole is absent of holes.
