The Ruby has been known since before the days of the bible. The name comes from the Latin word rubeus, 'red'. It has been known as a Stone of Nobility. The crown worn by the queen of England on her coronation has the famous jewel called the Black Prince's Ruby.

There are many warm and powerful vibrational qualities coming from the ruby gem stone and crystal. Among these it is said that

Ruby is a red sapphire. In 1890 ruby was listed as the most valuable of the corundum family of stones. Corundum is the extremely hard and abrasive, or scratchy type of stones, mainly the diamond and sapphire stones. Today a high quality ruby can still be much more valuable than a diamond.
An asterism is a starlike play of light from a polished stone, or mineral, and is due to crystallographically arranged minute inclusions. Inclusions are internal features formed inside a stone appearing in various ways such as fine needles. Some sapphires will have this unique quality.
Sometimes other stones such as garnets, ruby spinels, red quartz, or red tourmaline get passed off as a ruby. But the true ruby will easily scratch all of these other stones.
The true ruby will turn green under the flames of a blow-pipe, but when cooled off, it resumes its original color.
These days gem stones can be artificially created in labs. The once called reconstructed rubies may be of a very fine color and closely resemble the real thing but they lack the brilliancy and fire of the true ruby. A microscopical test will show the manufactured stone from the natural stone.
Ruby crystals have long been thought of as superior crystals, even in ancient times. In Sanskrit, the ancient language of India the stone was call ratnaraj, meaning 'king of precious stones'. The most famous sapphires have come from India.
