HISTORY SNAPSHOT- 1780-1861 Great Brittain

The main character in the snapshots you will see here is Charles James FOX born in London in 1749.  Encyclopedia Brittanica can give you his details here, though these old pages of recorded  history seem to show his character.

Fox was against oppression and believed the peoples and colonies of the Brittish Empire should not be exploited.  This placed him in the position of supporting the American fight for Independance from Brittain, even though he was a member of Brittish Parliment.  These snapshots are a recap of a speech he gave in Parliment following the defeat of the Brittish. 

"What was the cause of our wasting forty millions of money, and sixty thousand lives? The American war!"  "O blind and incapable men! whose measures are framed with so little foresight,..."


Some years later Fox was standing up for the people of India.  His words were recorded and centuries later here they are on the snapshots below.

"What are we to think of a government whose good fortune is supposed to spring from the calamities of its subjects, whose aggrandizement grows out of the miseries of mankind?
This is the kind of government exercised under the East India Company upon the natives of..."
