Gypsum and Selenite

Gypsum and Selenite

Gypsum, in crystal formation is selenite, in the form of masses it is alabaster, and in fibrous shapes it is called gypsum.

According to Melody in her encyclopedic work Love Is In The Earth,  the fibrous gypsum stone;

 “ can be used to mold ones character toward both the ideals of growth an improvement.”.      “ It also helps one to sustain the self when events of life are ‘happening too quickly’. "

and continuing with more information

"The energy, although always stimulating the activation of the crown chakra, acts to provide the ‘fibers to tether’ one to focus.”   ...“ It has also been used by the ancient tribes to stimulate fertility.”

Melody’s discussion of selenite, the transparent variety of crystallized gypsum, is lengthy and elbaorative.  Among a few highlights that will be expanded on here are the stone’s ability to bring about;

 “clarity of the mind expanding ones awareness of the self…”

“ It allows one to access the interior of the physical body in order to understand existing disorders, providing information with respect to the ‘fix.”

...assistance with “ the protective membrane linings which surround the cell…”.

and, ..selenite with copper formation has been labeled as the ‘Venus of the Alchemists’ and may bring powers of transmutation…and “tend to bring the system of alchemy to life…”

The qualities of selenite and gypsum crystal and stone formations can barely be  touched on here There is so much information in these and other books that the point of this article is merely to:  highlight a bit of information, draw attention to the definite relationship of the uses of both crystal and mineral, touch on the interplay of astral and physical forces, and refer those interested to the key resources that can provide more in depth study.

Having offered a few qualities and uses of the stone let's look at the  mineral or cell salt substance of gypsum and explore the interplay of physical and astral qualities .

As a cell salt, the mineral state or chemical composition of gypsum is calcium sulphate with 20% water- CaSo 4*(H2O).

A key listed use of this cell salt as provided on Schuesslers Cell Salts states;

“Another typical operational area of calcium sulphate is this ability to relieve suppurating processes.”

Be keen to note that suppurating has to do with the formation of pus.  This article will only touch on this, but the book linked below, by George Carey and Inez Perry, provides a more in depth understanding of this and more.

In the 1932 era book The Zodiac and the Salts of Salvation  -by Carey and Perry,   gypsum is also called Calcera Sulphate,…

“One of the cell-salts of the blood , Calcera sulphate, is the mineral (“stone”) that especially corresponds to the Scorpio nature. Crude Calcera sulphate is gypsum, or sulphate of lime.”

 Calcium sulph, or sulphate of lime, forms the egg shell and without this protection the egg would not be preserved, and could not fulfill its function.  The chaper on the sign of Scorpio goes in to interesting detail relative to eggs;

  “…These germ cells are little eggs,… and must have shells to protect them.”
“When Calcium sulph becomes very deficient there is, naturally, insufficient to make the corpuscles or human egg-shells.  The result is that their contents are unable to remain intact.  They turn to pus.”

and thus lets us know that deficiency in Calcium sulph in the body it is one of  the causes of barrenness in females, prostrate issues in males and anemia as well.

 Whether you are familiar with astrology, or interested in the zodiac is really immaterial, since what is really the subject here is the matter, the material of the human body.

According to Schwaller de Lubicz this is the entire purpose of the Ancient Egyptian Temple of Luxor. And others imply the same meaning to the famous inscription  “Man, Know Thyself” at the entrance of the Greek Temple of Apollo at Delphi.

Delving further here with Carey and Perry may become confusing or seemingly fragmented because so much is being left out of the picture. These quotes and summaries are merely the pieces scattered between the framed outline of the puzzle.  Reading more pieces inside the books, or pondering some of life's experiences defines the shapes and colors of the picture more and more clearly and then the pieces begin to fit, to fall into place... unexpectedly.

Scorpio is a water sign.  Adding water to lime will change the chemical formation and plaster of Paris is thus formed, a white stone so to speak.

Before carrying this further into alchemical or astrological references it is important to relay that plaster of Paris may not actually have been named this way simply because it was discovered near Paris.  Perry argues, "No, not so".  She relays that likely, since the etymology of Paris is from the Latin verb pareo -meaning

“To become visible, to appear, to bring forth, to lay (as concerning eggs).  This latter is very apropos since eggs are protected by shells of this salt, plaster of Paris. “ …

She continues...

“It  is well known that when this salt is mixed with water to form plaster, the water quickly evaporates, leaving a hard surface which serves as a protection.”

A ..“deficiency [of this salt] in the blood, …not only causes symptoms called disease in physical functions, but it disturbs the astral fluids and gray matter of brain cells and thereby changes the operation of mind into in-harmony.”   [dis-harmony]

In his other books George W. Carey {1845-1924) discusses processes of the body and the Zodiac, and refers to 'the stone' in his work The Wonders of the Human Body.  Read book highlights

Referencing  Schwaller for an angle from the Egyptian world still aligns these Lights on the matter as the following tiny piece of his massive work conveys...

…” the feeling of objective reality does not simply arise from cerebral action toward the outside, but, by means of the senses, from a crossed functions of reflection toward the intellect.  The white cerebral matter is then “lunar” in the sense that it has the character of a neutral, indifferent environment, a reflector of impressions.”

So much of alchemy includes the operation of the sun and the moon.  The black phase, the white phase,.. the stone.  Astrology refers to the scorpian, Scorpio, later as later the Eagle.   Perry says relative to this Eagle- every person born under the Scorpio sign..."should well consider this wonderful alchemical operationof his esoteric stone, and thus realize the possibilities in store for him on his journey to the "Eyrie of the White Eagle".

The alchemist Dennis Hauck writes of the white phase as… "a  new level of strength and integrity the alchemists call the stone".

Selenite -a name derived from the Greek in allusion to its pearly luster (moon light) on cleavage fragments.

Gypsum- meaning to to wander without a fixed purpose, to go around, or to gyrate, a circular motion.  ... But add water and a stone is formed.

Gypsy is derived from the same root.

Gyri [plural] or gyrus are the  ridge or fold between two clefts on the cerebral surface in the brain.  Already mentioned was Schwaller de Lubicz  references the white cerebral matter in his discussions of Luxor, the Temple of Man in Egypt.

Another noteworthy piece could be a relation to the words, gypsum and Egypt,.. etc

What a flood of information to swim around in, or simply wade in to get your feet wet.  Don't be afraid to dive in.   If it all seems way over your head just remember, so is the sun, the moon and all the stars.  But the light penetrates in waves and particles to help us see.
