Back in the 1960's, when Flower Power was cool and the high tech device was the color TV in the living room, back then the way to keep your watch or the clocks at home synchronized to all the clocks in your time zone was this. You put in a call to the Time Lady.
You dialed 444 on the rotary dial land line phone and the time lady would pick up the call and say "At the tone the time will be ... seven forty seven... and 5 seconds"....BEEP. And then she would keep repeating the time and the tone would beep until the caller hung up.
Back in those days if the power went out the landline phones did not go out.
What a long way we have travelled in sixty years. The time lady is buried in a time capsule and the clocks have gone nuclear
But the power still goes out ???

You can finish reading that article at the cerncourier website... if you have the time ... and if the power doesn't go out.
