To a person unfamiliar with Rudolf Steiner the book COSMIC MEMORY may seem very 'spacey' - to use that word entirely as a pun. Cosmic Memory discusses the evolution of earth through the evolution of space and planets in a mystical perception that is not at all a concrete matter.
To a person unfamiliar with the term akasha or akashic records it may be challenging to understand the concept as it may have been understood by ancient humanity or Steiner. As human beings evolve so does the human relation and interaction with the unseen realms which are, for most humans, beyond our five senses in this modern era. A simple modern dictionary will define the word akasha as
-a supposed universal etheric field in which a record of past events is imprinted.
In both the ancient cosmologies and the science of modern man the universal ether aka the etheric field has been recognized, explored, discussed and disputed.
Is the Higgs Field of quantum physics the evolution or discovery of ancient ideas of air, aether, etheric, quintessence?
The words may change but for the spiritual and science oriented human the realm remains what it has been since the beginning, a mystery.
A dictionary today defines ether for us this way:ether (also aether) -
a very rarefied and highly elastic substance formerly believed to permeate all space, including the interstices between the particles of matter, and to be the medium whose vibrations constituted light and other electromagnetic radiation.
In the year 2012, just 14 years ago, the Higgs particle and the Higgs Field were 'discovered' by physicists at CERN.
"You and everything around you are made of particles. But when the universe began, no particles had mass; they all sped around at the speed of light. Stars, planets and life could only emerge because particles gained their mass from a fundamental field associated with the Higgs boson. The existence of this mass-giving field was confirmed in 2012, when the Higgs boson particle was discovered at CERN". - source CERN Website
The book Cosmic Memory pulls together Steiner first works discussing a cosmology resulting from that spiritual perception which he described as “a fully conscious standing-within the spiritual world.” This is to say that Steiner described his ability to become aware of the spiritual unseen world as a penetration, a seeing into and comprehending what was seen while fully conscious, awake and aware of all that was occurring. - This is not unlike experiences of Nicola Tesla.
Tesla grew up a keenly imaginative child, becoming fluent in six languages and developing a fascination for mechanical contraptions. A science prodigy, he was destined for the family occupations of priesthood or the military, but he was able, during a childhood illness, to get permission to pursue his dreams in science. He described his adventurous imaginings to be much more than dreams; instead, they were highly detailed visualizations with a dash of intuition added. source The Franklin Institute
In his autobiography Rudolf Steiner refers to the early years of the present century as the time when,
“Out of the experience of the spiritual world in general developed specific details of knowledge.” (Op. cit. pp. 326, 328.)
"Steiner has stated that from his early childhood he knew the reality of the spiritual world because he could experience this spiritual world directly. However, only after nearly forty years was it possible for him to transmit to others concrete, detailed information regarding this spiritual world" . -* source PAUL MARSHAL ALLEN Englewood, New Jersey June, 1959
