SIDE NOTE -Venus and Velikovsky

The main article to this side note is here

How much of scientic writing today is written for public awareness and understanding?  World's In Collision was a best seller upon its release in 1950.  It resonated with the public, it spoke to the intelligent public.

It was suppressed by efforts led by Harlow Shapley of Harvard University.  I was curious about this man Shapley and what his background was.  I was curious what books he wrote, what his legacy to science has been.  I looked at the website offered by his family and a timeline provided there.

Shapley didn't read the work he was against,  but his collegue did and recommended to him that he read Velikovsky's work.

On May 23, 1946, Horace Kallen wrote to Shapley that he was “impressed by what Dr. Velikovsky has to say and the way in which he has established his hypothesis that I feel as eager as he to have it undergo the crucial test which the spectroscopic analysis he suggests would be”. source  velikovsky encycopedia

But most interesting is that Shapley replied to Kallen

“. .. If in historical times there have been these changes in the structure of the solar system, .. then the laws of Newton are false. .. if Dr. Velikovsky is right, the rest of us are crazy -source  velikovsky encyclopedia

In 1964 students at Princeton University printed in their paper, The Daily Princetonian

"....what the Velikovsky affair made crystal clear ... is that the theories of science may be held not only for the truth they embody, but because of the vested interests they represent for those who hold them. "

This full quote from the paper was published in the Preface of the Delta edition of Worlds in Collision (1965) and can be read here ,

The Velikovsky Encyclopedia is a really good starting point to get an objective overview of the work of Velikovsky, the critisisms of it and support of it.

V Archive Org  is a site established by the daughters of Immanual Velikovsky. This is great for looking at his work from ancient sources, in depth chapters on Greece, planetary ages and is also where a more personal story can be found and other personal writings of Velikovsky.

Laird Scranton's book is working off Velikovsky's multiple premises or proposed theories.  He reviews what was laid out for investigation in 1950, and follows up with what had been discovered in the sixty years since, up to 2012 when his book was published.   If you want to hit specific points you can go to the End Notes at the back of the book and read key points of each chapter.  For example find in Chapter 2. " Minoan Eruption of Thera" and "Mount Saint Helens" -1980

Graham Hancock listed Larid Scanton as AOM Author Of the Month on his website with an article discussing Velikovsky, and Laird's book.
