This book is an expoloration of the Writings of Columbus, the writings called the letters which Columbus had written to Ferdinand and Isobella of Spain.

read the book Or read the Introduction just 14 pages
This book is my choice resource for Christopher Columbus because:
- It was published in 1892 within a book series titled FICTION FACT FANCY Series as seen on the cover of the book
- It is immediately established by book editor Paul Leicester Ford, in the Introduction pages, that there is more than one story about Columbus, and about these letters he has written. Ford says,
"In the four centuries which have elapsed since Christopher Columbus sailed his caravels to the westward in search of the Indies, [... ] two factions have developed, holding antagonistic opinions regarding his personality and achievements. The one, regardless of flaws in his character and methods, seeks his canonization from the great Church of which he was so ardent a follower; [...] The other, losing all breadth of view in the minuteness of its investigation of his life and works, finds him a vain, ignorant, and even half-mad enthusiast".
__________
"Nor need these views occasion surprise. Such opposite opinions of the same person are not uncommon either of those who have made or are making history"
Having come upon and read or browsed various books relating to Columbus, I found this book relays details in footnotes as to sourcing, historical context and in the footnotes an opinion of best sources is freely given, though the version(s) from the popular and accepted publication is presented as well as an alternative source of the details.
Another book published as The Letter of Colombus On The Discovery of America sheds light in this editor's own way on the events surrounding the preservation, lack of preservation and translations of the original letters of Columbus.
