Old Books And Dancing Particles

Old Books And Dancing Particles

In the mid 90's I read The Turning Point and looking back now at the review ( below) written some  forty years ago it feels ... disappointing.  The list of problems has not changed at all so I guess the world needed more than a new vision.

"A compelling vision of a new reality, a reconciliation of science and the human spirit for a future that will work The dynamics underlying the major problems of our time--cancer, crime, pollution, nuclear power, inflation, the energy shortage--are all the same. We have reached a time of dramatic and potentially dangerous change, a turning point for the planet as a whole. We need a new vision of reality, one that allows the forces transforming our world to flow together as a positive movement for social change. Now distinguished scientist Fritjof Capra gives us that vision, a holistic paradigm of science and spirit.  - Jim Lovelock, New Scientist

According to todays CERN website there was a new vision 80 years ago. A vision for Peace

"CERN’s origins can be traced to the 1940s A small number of visionary scientists in Europe and North America identified the need for Europe to have a world-class physics research facility. Their vision was both to stop the brain drain to America that had begun during the Second World War, and to provide a force for unity in post-war Europe. Today, CERN unites scientists from around the world in the pursuit of knowledge"

The mission of the huge venture was also stated:

Since CERN began, fundamental physics has been our core business. Our work here will help to uncover what the universe is made of and how it works.

And make this knowledge available to the public?  I didn't see that stated as part of the mission.  But the do have this public website worth perusing so maybe all the details are freely available.  In any case it would appear that was uncovered about the universe is that the ancient wisdom contained the seed, the source knowledge.

In 2004 a statue of the of the ancient Hindu God Shiva was installed at CERN

The European Organization of Nuclear Research (CERN )

"On 8th June, 2004, a six feet tall Lord Nataraja idol was unveiled at its [CERN]  head quarters, just in front of the Director General’s office. We know that Lord Shiva is worshipped in India as one of the Trinity deities of Hinduism, and Lord Nataraja is his depiction as the divine cosmic dancer. Accordingly,on the base of this idol, “Adi Sankara’s sloka is engraved in Sanskrit with English translation”

"A special plaque is also placed next to the idol and explains the significance of the metaphor of Nataraja’s cosmic dance with several quotations from the book “The Tao of Physics” written by “Fritjof Capra, an Austrian born American Physicist”.   -Raja Kishore Paramguru

In 1975 Fritjof Capra published The Tao of Physics a book which I also read in the mid 90's along with Gary Zukov's The Dancing WuLi Masters

The books brought together the  ancient wisdom of Eastern Religions with modern science which was highly interesting and is understood even more today, though it seems less public.

A journal called Toward the Unification of Sciences has published an interesting article titled Statue of Nataraja at CERN: The Cosmic Dance of Subatomic Particles which is the place to read more about why  this statue was installed at CERN.  And also about the book written by Fritjof Capra.

Used copies of Capra's early books can now be found for under  $6.  His later works and more about the man himself are found on this website
